No more distractions!

42-15495677Some days, I want to scream.  I’m sure you’ve had that experience, too. Perhaps, not for the same reason. I want to scream because I cannot believe the number of distractions people who say they are focused on building their businesses find….AND JUSTIFY! ( Oooo, that’s just put the scream up a few decibels! )

As a business consultant and executive coach, I get the urge to scream far too frequently for that one reason alone. Wonderful, well-intended people hire me to coach them to systematically clarify, construct and grow their businesses. They swear blind that they want to achieve “A”, and are frequently running after the rest of the alphabet, with carefully constructed, elaborately convoluted, reasons why!

How do you determine if you are driving yourself to distraction?

  • You are not getting where you say you want to go in a meaningfully measurable way.
  • You are feeling overwhelmed much of the time, too many wheels spinning and not enough hands.
  • You are always attracted to new, shiny objects when what you were playing with is just becoming pliable, comfortable and useful.
  • You vociferously defend your choices to stray from the mission you’ve set yourself and justify the departures loudly.

I know it is difficult to stay generally on the path. Shiny things attract. Marketing language of others beckons. Fear of “losing an opportunity,” or “leaving a stone unturned” paralyzes. Lack of confidence in your intuition and judgment wanes. Others are too ready to share their opinions of what you should do…even if you didn’t ask. There are many distractions. It is up to each one of us to calculate the cost of tempting detours in terms of time, energy, money, frustration and loss.  And, it’s up to each one of us to ‘fess up to the degree of our commitment to our missions.  Sometimes, that’s just talk, too.

One thing I know for sure…and I learned it the long, hard way: I cannot say I want one thing, do another, and hope for a satifying result. Although, I do know a few people so addicted to drama, that they wouldn’t know what to do if they didn’t have a tale of woe to tell. They love distractions, especially when they can make them someone else’s fault.  Go figure!

Thanks for letting me “scream” here!  Is it still a scream if no one is listening?

Monday Morning First Thing…

open-binder-with-penMonday morning, first thing. What do you do when you set yourself to working on your business?  You’ve had your coffee, supported yourself with what feeds you physically, mentally and spiritually, and now you’re ready to get to work.  What do you do?

For many folks, the first thing Monday morning would be a create a “to-do” list. But there is something more important than that: review your business and marketing plans.

“What do you mean?  I already know what’s there. I can just jump in.”

“Not so fast, grasshopper. Take the time to remind yourself of who you are, what you do, where you’re going and how you have planned to get there. Then, decide what is the BEST thing to do today!”

It’s not just what is the next thing to do. It’s what is the next best thing to do. Without the clarity of remembering your carefully thought-out  plan and referring to it at least weekly, you can get mired in activity and miss the progress!

What Gets in the Way of Women Entrepreneurs Making Money?

Do we get in our own way on purpose? Sometimes, I wonder.

In my newsletter, The Rhino Wrestler yesterday, I was thinking about the distinction we must make between activity and progress. It is so easy to stay very busy, but the question is:

There is no problem filling every available minute of the day with tasks, but, are we convincing ourselves that they are both urgent and important. That would be quite hard to do if we are avoiding making important telephone calls to further our businesses in favor of re-arranging folders on our computers….if we are honest with ourselves, that is!

“What are we busy about?”

Denial is the only perfect system. Think about it! If we are in denial that we are just filling time with activity, we will continue to happily do that and justify our behavior. If we wake up and smell the herbal tea, we’ll notice that we may be very busy but we’re getting nowhere towards the bank! Isn’t that why we’re in business: to make a contribution and make money doing it?

I hope so, because, unless you are independently wealthy and able to contribute your time, energy and expertise to altruistic causes, you are doing what you are doing to create a life AND a livelihood.

So, play on your own team today. Examine if what you are doing is activity, or true progress. How? If you cannot find what you’re doing on your business plan, then, don’t do it!

Don’t have a business plan? Then, let’s work together through coaching to get you to the place where you have a real business first! That’s the fastest way to align who you are and what you do with your values, vision, beliefs and purpose. Visit my website below now.
