Dr. Rhoberta Shaler was a single parent when there was no such phrase. When her first child was born, community tongues wagged at her audacity and heads turned at her disgrace. Facing that defining decision, to be a single mother when even her parents wanted abortion or adoption, was the first indication of her entrepreneurial spirit. Even the doctor who proclaimed her pregancy responded with a concerned:

"Whatever are you going to do?"  She looked him straight in the eye and said:

"I'm going to have a baby!"

That was all a long time ago and her wonder child is now mother to a young adult of her own. But, that first decision made all the difference. It charged her with the desire and responsibility for finding ways to create income, capitalize on her skills, plan well, take risks and make tough decisions--all key factors in entrepreneurial success.

When her daughter was three, Dr. Shaler married and had two sons, eventually becoming a single mother to three. Through it all, she amazingly managed to maintain a sense of optimism and a sense of humor. Again, critical entrepreneurial components. During this time, raising the three alone, she worked full-time, ran a consulting and speaking business on the side, created products and got three university degrees.  When asked how she did it, the response was:

"I just kept going, never thinking it could not be done. Each day, I focused on what needed to be done and added what could be done.  Fortunately, I have always been blessed with great health, high energy and a "can-do" attitude. It never occurred to me that I could not do things to accomplish what I thought needed to be done. I'm grateful for that."

Dr. Shaler had a long-time interest in yoga stemming from a book she found in a library when she was eighteen years old. That interest blossomed into her becoming a Sivanada-certified Yoga Siromani in her forties and creating a health and management retreat center on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

In 1998, she kept a promise to herself. That promise--that when her youngest child had been on his own for two years she could choose to re-create her life--took her to begin life as a full-time entrepreneur, speaker and author...and from Canada to the United States. What a journey! What a risk! What a leap!

Dr. Shaler now has written nine books, has over sixty websites, many audio programs, teleseminars and classes, and enjoys life speaking, writing and coaching women entrepreneurs to live their dreams by knowing who they are, what they value, what they want, and, by aligning their values, principles, beliefs and purpose with what they do to make a successful life and a livelihood.

Dr. Shaler lives in San Diego County, California and is now a dual citizen of the United States and Canada.  She is the Founder of the Optimize Institute in Escondido, CA, and of Spiritual Living Network, free social-networking for spiritually-minded people.
